Part 0/5: Introduction

This is an introduction to a series of articles and tutorials related to the recent(ish) redesign of the Erskine Design website. We’ll go into detail about the various processes and developments that resulted in what we believe is the perfect agency website for us, all in the hope that someone out there will be interested.

The said articles will be posted in parts:

Part 1 will document the initial stages of the design process, from the first sit-down in front of a blank Photoshop document to the first instance of a solid “fuck yeah – we’ve cracked it” moment.

In Part 2 I’ll talk about the process of design development; how we went about designing, then redesigning our designs and perhaps most importantly, knowing when to stop.

Part 3 will be look into how we’ve used and developed our brand throughout the site, and how the site became a direct extension of us as a team.

For Part 4 we will need your help. We pride ourselves on writing decent CSS here at Erskine, and we’re pretty sure there’s some good stuff tucked into our new site. Email us if you want any particular techniques/visual approaches explained in detail and we’ll do our best to cover as much as possible.

Part 5 will focus on the importance of iteration after the site has launched. I don’t think any web designer can claim to have ever launched a totally perfect site design; a lot can be said for giving a design some time and space before returning to reevaluate how it’s working.

Part 6 will give an overview of our approach to viewing the site on mobile devices, most notably the Apple iPhone. We’ll talk about the business benefits, the design and the techniques involved.

I think that’ll round off things nicely, although we’re not against delving into other areas if anyone asks a particularly insightful question. Part 1 will be arriving in your screens within a week.

    Hi Greg,
but where is Part 1? ;) it’s been more than a week you’ve publish that, I can’t wait (I’ve been following your new website’s evolutions since a few months cause I love Erskin’s design and the way you’re coding it: always an exemple for me).

Sev, it’s imminent. When I wrote this intro I had a bunch of spare hours into which I thought the writing of Part 1 would fit nicely. Unfortunately it didn’t.

I’m writing it today, so hopefully I’ll get around to publishing it later. Apologies for the delay mate.
